## Our Guide to Understanding Fractions

##### What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It's a way to divide something into equal parts and show one or more of those parts.

**Example:** Imagine a square that is a whole. If we divide it into four equal parts, each part is one-fourth (1/4) of the square. If we shade one of those parts, we have shaded 1/4 of the whole.

##### Creating Unit Fractions

To understand fractions, start with unit fractions, which have 1 as the numerator.

**Example:** Divide a rectangle into eight equal parts. Each part is one-eighth (1/8) of the whole. Shading one of these parts shows 1/8 of the rectangle.

##### Identifying Fractions in Shapes

Look at different shapes divided into equal parts to identify fractions.

**Rectangles:**If a rectangle is divided into three equal parts and one is shaded, the shaded part is 1/3.**Circles:**If a circle is divided into five equal parts and one is shaded, the shaded part is 1/5.**Triangles:**For triangles, ensure the parts are equal. If not, it cannot be a valid fraction representation.

##### Practice Problems

Test your understanding by identifying fractions in different shapes. For example, if a shape is divided into several parts, determine the fraction that a shaded part represents.

**Example:** A rectangle divided into three equal parts with one part shaded is 1/3.
